The Hanoi City Traffic Management and Operation Center has extended the validity period of the old-style free traffic ticket (non-chip card) until December 31, 2026.
Previously, on June 23rd, the Hanoi City Traffic Management and Operation Center announced that it was issuing and replacing all paper monthly bus passes with transportation passes applicable on all subsidized bus routes in Hanoi. Customers registering for and renewing (purchasing) transportation passes will use cashless payment methods. From July 1st, paper monthly passes will no longer be valid on subsidized bus routes.
According to the City’s Transportation Management and Operation Center, all previously issued and currently circulating electronic tickets (virtual and physical cards) remain valid for use on the entire subsidized bus network in the city. In addition, free passes (plastic cards without chips) will continue to be valid until July 31st. From August 1st, free passes (plastic cards without chips) will no longer be valid for use on subsidized bus routes.
Free rides are granted to senior citizens (60 years and older) and children under 6 years old using their citizen identification card or virtual card (non-physical card) when using subsidized public transportation. Additionally, free rides are granted to war veterans, people with disabilities, and members of impoverished households using virtual cards (non-physical cards), or they can register for a physical card with a chip for use on subsidized public transportation.
Regarding the registration process for electronic transport passes, customers wishing to register for a new pass or exchange their paper monthly pass for an electronic transport pass can register online via the website: https://vedientuonline.com.vn or download the “Hanoi Transport Pass” app to use a virtual transport pass. The point of exchange is at 1 Kim Ma Street, Giang Vo Ward, Hanoi. All electronic passes are monitored using control devices installed on buses.
The ticket control process is as follows: For customers purchasing single-trip tickets and paying with cash, when passengers board the bus, the service staff sells the single-trip ticket using a device by pressing the “Single-trip Ticket” button. The system automatically calculates the ticket price based on the distance from the passenger’s boarding point to the final destination and displays the amount on the device. The service staff then prints the ticket, hands it to the passenger, and collects cash directly from the passenger. Passengers keep their tickets throughout their journey.
For customers purchasing single-trip tickets and paying with a virtual transport card (Transport Account) on the “HN Transport Card” app and other cashless payment methods, at the entrance gate, staff will instruct passengers to tap their physical transport card (the card with the pre-loaded value) or scan the QR code of their transport account (virtual card) on the app into the reader of the control device located at the entrance gate. The system will automatically calculate the fare based on the distance from the passenger’s boarding point to the end point of the route and deduct (temporarily hold) the amount.
At the exit gate, passengers tap/scan their card or scan the QR code via the reader of the control device at the exit gate. The system will automatically calculate the amount based on the passenger’s distance traveled and refund any excess amount. If the passenger does not tap/scan their card or scan the QR code via the reader of the control device at the exit gate, the system will automatically record the passenger’s distance traveled to the end of the route (equal to the amount temporarily held).
For passengers using time-based passes (day/week/monthly passes), at the boarding gate, staff will instruct passengers to tap their physical transport card (a pre-loaded card) or scan their transport account QR code (virtual card) on the app against the reader of the control device located at the gate. The system will automatically check the expiration date and verify the validity of the card before allowing entry.
If the card is valid, the on-board control device will display the message “Valid card, please proceed.” If it is invalid, the control device will display a message depending on the specific case, such as: card not renewed; card not on the correct route; card locked; card deactivated; or invalid card (for all other cases). At the exit gate, passengers tap their card or scan the application code at the exit gate control device for the system to record the trip history, which is used for passenger density statistics and inter-route revenue allocation.
